Backpack

Backpack, in its simplest form is a cloth sack which is carried on back of a person and is fastened with a couple of straps that go past the shoulders. However, some exceptions can be noticed. There are numerous methods of carrying them. One method of carrying is with one hand (as in briefcase). They can also be used for holding water and other such materials.

As compared to handbags, they are often preferred for heavy loads. This is because as compared to the hands, the shoulders are well suited for bearing heavy loads. Large backpacks which are used for carrying loads in excess of 10 kgs commonly offload a large part of the weight into the padded hip belts, which leaves the shoulder straps for load stabilizing purposes. This improves the heavy load carrying potential as the shoulders are weaker as compared to the hips. In addition, it also raises the balance and agility, since the load rallies nearer to the own center of mass of the person.

Origin of the Word:

It was only in the 1910’s that the word “backpack” was coined. Previously, the words “packsack” and “knapsack” were used and presently, they mainly occur as regionalisms in North America. The alternative names for backpack include “Bergen” and “Haversack” which are normally affiliated with the “British Armed Forces”.

They are also referred as “packs” as is done in outdoors contexts. However, it is sometimes ambiguous in comparison to other bags such as duffel bags and saddlebags. They are considered to be a standard part for the soldiers and especially in the infantry. The best examples include the British army PLCE rucksack attachment and the United States ALICE field pack. These are largely available in the civilian markets, both as replicas and as actual military leftovers.

Usage in Various Fields:

Sometimes, backpacks are used as luggage and especially as carry-on bags.  Apart from their use outdoors in pursuits, they are also used for other sports. Another common variety which is sometimes known as a “frame pack” or a “technical pack” is designed for other outdoor activities.

Such packs are much complex in nature as compared to the other varieties. In comparison to those which are used for schoolbooks, these are designed for carrying significantly heavier loads.

In most nations, backpacks are identified heavily with the students and are the means for transporting materials for education to and from school. Hence, they are sometimes called as “bookbags”. For many students, the purchase of a fashionable, useful and suitable type is a crucial ritual for numerous students. Typical varieties observed in school normally lack the rigid frame of the outdoor style and comprise of only a few pockets, apart from the main holding space of the pack.
